Recommended Autobiography submitted by rats on March 19, 2008, 5:29pm This book is written in a casual, revealing way that might turn off some people. I found it delightful and at times intellectually intriguing. The author examines the 1960s, adolescence, women, feminism and insanity in a refreshingly honest and personal fashion. I loved her analysis of the DSM III definition of borderline personality disorder. I think everyone in clinical social work and clinical psychology/psychiatry should spend a few hours reading this book and reflect on this former patient's perspective.
Beautiful Memoir submitted by Motomori on August 10, 2015, 12:15pm This is a great memoir about Susana Kaysen's stay in a mental hospital. She talks about what life was like in the hospital, her recovery, and her insecurities. She does a beautiful job of painting a picture of what it is like to be labeled crazy, and what it's like to suddenly have to figure out who you are.
GI submitted by a2sue on August 16, 2015, 6:42pm I thought that the film Girl, Interrupted, was better than the novel.
interesting and thought provoking submitted by Jackie77 on August 21, 2015, 10:53am I enjoyed reading this book after watching the movie of the same name. It was great insight to what really goes on inside of mental health instituions. Also speaks about the dynamics of people being diagnosed with mental health problems and the stygma that follows those individuals.
Curious to read submitted by jduffy12 on April 30, 2016, 11:37pm I have the same diagnosis and it would be nice to hear someone else's perspective. And to read about how far we came in the mental health care.
