funny and deep submitted by 21621031390949 on June 29, 2011, 8:08pm How I wish I'd had this book when my first child was born! Anne Lamott captures the incredible stress, terror, fear, adoration, love, and fierce protectiveness of motherhood, and says it all with such humor. Black humor, mixed with angst and love. Not for everyone, though. Lots of expletives, and also God-talk.

wonderful! submitted by fairytale on August 13, 2011, 2:21pm I'd highly recommend this book to anyone embarking on the journey of parenthood.

Not what I expected submitted by sherlonya on July 19, 2019, 4:04pm I was propelled through this book thinking, "What's she going to say next." I thought that I would find a relatable story coming from an older first time mother. However, Lamott's experiences and outlook were so different than my own that I wouldn't get what I sought from this book. I was very distracted by how her recovery was so central to her memories of her son's first year, though I can understand why that would be the case. Every book isn't for everyone and though I finished reading this one, it wasn't for me.

Play it as it lays submitted by ccrose on August 24, 2019, 10:33am I like this woman. I like her admitted imperfection because, well I’m in that school of thought. She looks at all the cards she’s been dealt, the stuff others can only judge harshly, like “she’s a total loser/sinner/etc..” But I like her. I heard her read at the old Borders and she was pretty dang humble. And the single parenting of a newborn is a profound endurance test. Love trumps freaking out. Usually. Sometimes.
