COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Really boring submitted by bituck on June 22, 2015, 12:47pm This book was required reading from a classics list, and was one of the most boring ones. You are actually kinda sad when the characters don't die in the course of events.

A sobering look at infidelity submitted by willow on August 24, 2016, 12:47pm This is a somewhat dreary book about a man in 19th century New England; he falls in love with his wife's cousin and the societal "restraints" against infidelity. I never felt terribly sorry for them. It's a well known book, but I am not honestly sure I have ever heard anyone refer to it.

Warning: the next review down, by bituck, reveals the ending.

I disagree submitted by fneuberg on March 31, 2017, 9:23pm I read thia book while I was still in college. I am now two months short of 90.It is the only book I have ever read in one sitting. I am now going to read again to if still keeps me so entranced. Of course, as I was later to learn - this is not edith wharton's regular theme. Her work is mostly concerned with New York City in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Short but packs a punch. submitted by tcramer318 on June 11, 2023, 7:17pm Shirt, thoughtful, haunting. The Penguin Classics edition has a really in-depth introduction providing historical context. I'm glad to have read this one after having done The Age of Innocence and after having read April White's book on the divorce colony in South Dakota.
