The Begining of an Epic Journey submitted by Jan Wolter on June 18, 2013, 4:32pm A mother, beset with financial difficulties, has sold her house and is driving her four children to the home of a distant relative who she hopes will take them all in. On the way, she stops at a shopping mall, and asks the kids to wait in the car while she goes in. She never comes back. The kids, afraid that they will be separated, don't dare talk to the authorities, so instead, they start walking. It's a journey that will take them weeks, requiring them to find ways to get food, sleep safely, cross rivers, and, above all, stick together. It increasingly becomes clear that there is no home waiting for them at the end of the road, and so they undertake a task that makes their long walk seem simple - creating a home where none exists.

This is a fine book in it's own right, but really the best reason to read it is to set yourself up properly for the next two books in the series - "Dicey's Song" the story of how the leader of this band of children manages to settle down to a sort of normal life, and "Solitary Blue" the absolutely breathtakingly wonderful story of some other guy who somehow is connected to these people. Oh and there are a bunch of other books in the series.

I Loved This Book, so glad there are more in the series! submitted by jgetty on July 2, 2015, 8:12am I enjoyed this first story in the Tillerman series so very much. It is such a thoughtful book and inspirational. I believe now that this is a series that I will be sad to have end. I am so glad that this is the first of the series, because I want to continue reading about this family, learning about their journey and how they overcome these life challenges. Their resilience is incredible, and I was sometimes nervous and upset about how people treated them and the hardships and cruelty they had to survive. I'm grateful that Dicey is kind to her siblings because they are so dependent on her in their very hard life. I really enjoyed when they met people who were kind and who helped them and I was grateful to see there are nice people in this world. I wonder what the next book "Dicey's Song" will bring to my mind, and hope that all works out well for this family of survivors.

Classic submitted by lpettie on July 18, 2016, 6:29pm Heartbreaking and wonderful.

Family Life submitted by me11yagn on August 26, 2019, 2:59pm This book was a unique way to follow a family through difficult times, as they faced many barriers and challenges. I liked how realistic the book was. It was really great to see how Dicey had the confidence and determination to lead her family to a better life.
