A Courtroom Classic submitted by pamhockey25 on August 29, 2014, 1:09pm This book is a classic, but is still readable today. It is interesting to see how life was for people back in the 50’s and to realize this is one of the first books to deal with the subject matter of rape. This is also one of the first novels set in a courtroom, which is interesting to keep in mind for fans of that genre. I found this book very enjoyable.
Surprisingly Thrilling

Robert Traver has done the remarkable: he has taken all of the painstakingly detailed legalese surrounding a murder trial and woven it into a compelling story of suspense. Given the novel’s matter-of-fact tone and straightforward style, I have no idea how he does it, but this intimate look into a defense attorney’s mind during a pivotal (and suitably complex) case can be as thrilling as a modern pulse-pounder (if admittedly less kinetic). This book is a courtroom procedural to its very core, but it’s surprisingly good even 60 years after its initial publication. I loved the little twinge of doubt thrown in at the end, which feels very modern. Bonus points for setting the scene along the southern shores of Lake Superior.
