memorable weird protagonist submitted by lisa on August 28, 2015, 11:28am What a great lead character.

Great, and also, terrible. submitted by terpsichore17 on July 6, 2018, 7:27pm On one hand, this book features Toole's masterful use and hilarious juxtaposition of dialect. There’s vivid description of character and place, and a plot that ties up more neatly than I ever expected.

On the other hand: what a careful drawing of utterly repugnant people, what a to-do over a repellant man, and what offensive language throughout.

Ignatius Reilly sometimes seems too real (so similar to this or that man you know in real life; completely depressing); then his excesses go beyond the pale and read as caricature, amusing and even hysterical. Then a detail or two drags it back to reality, more depressing than ever.
