a must-read submitted by kittenkat101 on June 21, 2011, 4:06pm So many people have told me that they started the book, but just couldn't get into it. Keep reading. The first part of the story is slow because it contains a lot of backstory and references to the Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is well worth reading through Tolkien's sometimes extensive descriptions.

Start to series submitted by danielchen on June 29, 2011, 5:33pm Very good start

Fellowship submitted by KateTopham on July 11, 2011, 9:50pm Fellowship is a great beginning to a fantastic series. Don't let the occasional slowness bog you down, it will be worth it in the end. Tolkien's language is beautiful and his books are classics. Highly reccommended.

awsome submitted by jakabe on July 13, 2011, 6:11pm great for fantasy geeks

I have read this so many times submitted by kathscot on July 21, 2013, 8:59pm And it is always great. It is slow sometimes, but so worth it. And there are things in the books not in the movies (especially Tom Bombadil).

Good submitted by owenrennich on August 22, 2013, 3:06pm Good

G-R-E-A-T submitted by iamnotonfire on December 21, 2013, 12:14pm This series is GREAT, this book in particular, actually. Full of suspenseful action and adventure for anyone who likes on-going action. Don't worry if it is kind of boring at first, but keep it up, you'll see!!!

wonderful submitted by Akkitaset on January 4, 2014, 8:04am It starts out a bit slow, and that's why most people haven't read it. once you get to book two (same volume different book you may know it as halfway through the Fellowship of the ring if that makes sense) it gets WAAAAY better. inn the second and last book the is such excitement! so get though the first book, and YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fellowship of the Ring submitted by SBNB on June 28, 2014, 9:12pm This book is amazing. It's a great start to the Lord of the Rings.

Hard to say goodbye to Bilbo submitted by mjanen on July 15, 2014, 7:31pm if you come from The Hobbit, but a good yarn in its own right.

A Genre Classic submitted by Meginator on August 15, 2017, 6:13pm It's easy to tell why The Fellowship of the Ring, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy more generally, is such a classic. Tolkien's mastery of his invented Middle Earth is evident and lends the book(s) a certain gravitas that is completely immersive. This does lead occasionally to long passages of exposition, but here they seem more like important structural elements than like unnecessary padding; they do, however, inflate the book somewhat and can make for tough going if you're not completely invested. The story itself is a fairly traditional quest/adventure narrative and the book really does feel like a series opener, so much so that it's not particularly great to read in isolation. The book isn't perfect, by any means, but it's one of the best ever written in the high fantasy genre and there's a reason Tolkien's Middle Earth remains beloved to this day.

Good submitted by zmclaugh on August 14, 2018, 1:32pm A pretty good book, and a classic that you probably should read, made weaker by the lack of female characters.

legendary submitted by Sudar82 on July 11, 2019, 2:55pm the world is divided between people who read this book and those who haven't. if you are in the second group , get in the first one

Great start to a series submitted by crp on August 9, 2019, 8:35am A bit slow but once you move past that it gets quickly interesting and captivating. So worth the read.

Awesome submitted by MHZ on June 13, 2020, 7:49pm This book is great. I love all the Lord of the Rings.

Question submitted by calvinandhobbes on May 13, 2021, 7:39pm Is it large print, or are the words small?

An amazing story submitted by amandasaurus on June 20, 2022, 12:48am Such a detailed, well planned, incredible story. It’s long winded and has bits with a lot of description that would lose most of us, but if you can get past it, this is absolutely worth it.

Excellent submitted by TLW1998 on June 25, 2022, 11:37pm This is an excellent series that is well written and worth the time to read before seeing the movies.

great submitted by MenaceToSociety on June 15, 2023, 8:30pm cool

Classic submitted by hrgray on July 30, 2023, 10:59pm The Fellowship of the Ring really demonstrates Tolkien's skill at world-building and draws the reader in to Frodo's story. The pacing of the book is a bit odd because it wasn't written knowing it would be split into three parts, but this doesn't take away from the experience.

The Adventure Begins submitted by steeny17 on August 27, 2023, 3:33pm For lovers of The Hobbit, this next book in the Lord of the Rings saga has a very different feeling. Compared to the writing of The Hobbit, The Fellowship is grown up and quite dark at times. Still, there is a golden thread of hope and courage woven through the tale that will leave you, too, feeling a bit braver as you read along. An excellent place to begin your journey with Tolkien.
