Excellent submitted by grimest on July 20, 2013, 4:44pm Wonderful book - very engrossing

Exactly what I thought... submitted by Kikumatsu97 on July 27, 2015, 3:52pm I started it. I made a modest dent. I thought, "Oh, this is really good! What's everyone complaining about? Endless descriptive passages what? It's just lovely. I can do this!"

Then, I don't know, I saw something shiny, and had to set her down for a minute.

That was in 2002. Since then Anna's followed me through at least six apartments, on two coasts. I've resolved to keep this edition until I read it, and I'm not going to start it unless I'm sure I can commit to finishing.

Good submitted by Fishing Rainbow on June 17, 2016, 6:43pm It was very interesting but it took a while to finish.

Maybe I'm not cut out for Russian lit submitted by EJZ on July 23, 2018, 8:34pm I think I just don't like Russian novels, try as I might. Most seem to have far too many characters, and each with three separate names they may call each other at any given time! Aside from the difficulty, I just could not seem to connect with Anna.

Unexpectedly wonderful submitted by suttonp on June 19, 2019, 3:54pm Maybe I'm a sceptic, but I rarely believe other folk's book reviews. This book lived up to all its hype. It is relevent, moving and beautiful. Highly recommended. I cried like a baby at the end.

Russian Classic submitted by TLW1998 on July 28, 2019, 8:05pm This is a very long Russian classic. The book can be slow at times, but overall it is good. It offers a good glimpse into imperial Russia.

A Fine Example of the Psychological Novel submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on August 22, 2019, 11:36am Rebellious Anna succumbs to her attraction to a dashing officer and leaves her loveless marriage to embark on a fervent and ultimately doomed love affair. In doing so, she sacrifices her child and subjects herself to the condemnation of Russian high society. Despite its length, Anna Karenina draws readers into a breathtaking world that is vital and all-consuming in its realism. A major attraction: alongside his narrative, Tolstoy portrays the thoughts, feelings, motivations behind the actions of the characters, though without any moral judgment.

Dense but rewarding submitted by audreyhalversen on July 12, 2022, 10:37pm Some parts are slow, but overall this is an incredibly rich, thoughtful book. A classic for a reason and an all-time favorite of mine.

Best novel ever written submitted by S S on August 2, 2022, 5:45pm This is simply the most incredible novel ever written, not only for the scope and way Tolstoy juggles multiple characters and plots, but also for the deep psychological insight into the human condition. The emotions are still so fresh and relevant 145 years later--a hallmark of a Russian classic. Yes it is long and the passages about Levin's observations can be tedious, but you cannot live without reading this masterwork.

A classic that lives up to its reputation submitted by courtneyhooper on August 10, 2022, 9:24pm Perfect.
