Not my favorite Steinbeck novel submitted by cbrewster on July 30, 2014, 10:09am This book is nonfiction and follows Steinbeck and his dog, Charley, as they travel around the US. Because Steinbeck spent his career writing about the US, he felt he needed to stay in touch with it. The book is rather slow, but Steinbeck does make some interesting observations/generalizations about different areas of the country.
how times have changed submitted by 21621031390949 on August 26, 2017, 8:15pm I love this book and have read it multiple times. I love how Steinbeck describes the characteristics of the different regions - food, topography, language. Alas, much of this world is gone. Now we find the same stores and restaurants all across the nation, and you have to really get off the highways and onto the old US Routes in order to see any character.
Wonderful book submitted by ravsara on July 12, 2019, 3:18pm I love Steinbeck's glimpse of America and his musings about his travel companion, Charley. His vision about the environment is stunning, given that this was written long before the scourge of plastics. His depiction about racism in the South also felt timely. A must read...My only regret about Steinbeck is his two dimensional depiction of women. I've forced myself to overlook this in favor of the beauty of his writing.
All about the dog submitted by pepemama on August 7, 2019, 1:42pm Rocinante - only Steinbeck would name his camper that. I enjoyed the view of America - as real and relevant back when written as now.
