An intimate portrait of two men facing a world marked by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. But though the scope is narrow, the theme is universal: a friendship and shared dream that make an individual's existence meaningful.
Tragic tale of a simpleminded man and the friend who loves and tries to protect him.

Of Mice and Men submitted by sauerr on August 7, 2011, 12:33pm i found some of the language and context offensive, but it's a long-loved classic, so what can I say?

Wow submitted by xjasx on June 16, 2012, 11:47pm Great book, I feel bad for lennie though, leaves your mind filled after

Great submitted by niabw11 on July 12, 2013, 10:08am This Book was a great classic

Tragic Tale submitted by cbrewster on July 30, 2014, 8:40am A short and sad story about two ranch hands trying to achieve their dreams of owning their own land. The end was quite surprising to me. I read this book as an assignment for 9th grade adn I remember that I didn't hate it, but that I also didn't love it. I would like to read it again as an adult and see how I feel about now that I am older.

Great read for early high schoolers/ late middle schoolers submitted by mikerhc on August 11, 2018, 2:15pm This book shows history from the part of the US we really don’t learn about and it was a great read!

Could not recommend it more highly submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 22, 2019, 3:29pm I am absolutely blown away by this little 107 page book. I never read this in school, and my 10th grade son just suggested that I do before he takes it back to his school library. I read it in a day, and couldn’t be more glad that I did.

Written in 1937 (and won the Nobel Prize in Literature), the writing is easy to read, with a storyline about two ranch hands looking for work and finding a place on a new ranch. George takes care of Lennie, who is a big strong man who doesn’t understand much. These days we would say he has a cognitive impairment. They have a dream of owning their own place one day. Lennie’s simplicity draws out people’s honesty, and we learn of the hopes and dreams of several of the other characters in unexpected ways. The story twists and turns around people’s actions, with each step leading to others until an ending I did not see coming.

I work with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I see my client kids grown up in Lennie, in another time and if they did not have supports and lived in a world that did not understand them. This book breaks my heart.

I could not recommend it more highly. It’s 107 pages of easy reading that will make you think and feel. Please add it to your reading list.

Of mice and men submitted by crp on August 6, 2019, 7:20pm Classic Steinbeck

Every time submitted by pepemama on August 7, 2019, 1:38pm I can read the last pages an infinite number of times and still cry. This standard for short stories - too bad kids that read it miss so much of the nuance and depth.

disturbing, affecting submitted by FordAlpha on August 13, 2019, 3:42pm "Of Mice and Men" is deeply disturbing. I mean that in the best possible way. It's a quick read that sticks with you. If you haven't read Steinbeck, and/or don't have time for his longer works, this is a great introduction to his profoundly sympathetic view of frail humanity.

Fantastic submitted by CarolSeidl on June 29, 2021, 8:54pm Although I had to read this as an assignment for school, it ended up being one of my favorite books! Every single word is chosen so intentionally, making a truly wonderful work of literature.

Of Mice and Men submitted by czadams on August 27, 2022, 4:05pm A really touching story. I had a lot of fun writing a prequal to this story for an assignment, that explained his love of rabbits and the connection he and his friend george had. I think in some ways it was a really sweet ending, even though it was so sad because at least the friend did it in a humane way rather than some other person.
I think this book is a really revolutionary book in that it talks about intellectual disabilities in a time that probably did not give voice to this lived experience. The companionship between these two, was soo sweet.

Classic submitted by dave_472 on June 30, 2023, 4:37pm This is one of my favorite novels of all time. I love the movie too!

my favorite classic novel submitted by kat287 on July 1, 2023, 7:33am Probably my favorite classic novel; so much depth and provokes a lot of thought.

Worthwhile submitted by keldan315 on July 27, 2023, 8:07pm Certainly worthwhile for those hoping to expand their horizons and get to know another (historical) culture.

Thoughtful submitted by brooksza on August 18, 2023, 4:14pm Full of themes in a short book. I read the whole book in one afternoon.
