COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Don't overlook Steinbeck's greatest short novel submitted by Clarence Cromwell on August 30, 2007, 7:31pm It isn't Steinbeck's best-known work, but it may be one of his finest.
It portrays an occupying army and the citizens of an occupied country with equal understanding and empathy. Steinbeck never names the army or the invaded country, but many readers draw comparisons to the Nazi occupation of Norway.
While the play-like structure has distracted some critics--with charges that Steinbeck really ought to have written a play--it makes for a wonderful reading experience. In the interest of brevity: imagine a work with the compactness and orderliness of a stage play, coupled with the prosodic virtuosity of Grapes of Wrath, and the insight into human nature to be observed throughout "Of Mice and Men." The characters and events in this book will linger in your thoughts forever.
At a time when the United States is in the midst of a long occupation of two distant lands, the story is especially poignant.
