This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families--the Trasks and the Hamiltons--whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Favorite Classic submitted by monkk on June 27, 2011, 6:08pm I'll read this book over every couple of years for the rest of my life, I'm sure. It's always thrilling!

Best Steinbeck Novel submitted by cbrewster on July 30, 2014, 8:28am This is the novel I have read by Mr. Steinbeck. At times it felt as if this is not the same author writing this tale as the one who wrote Mice and Men, Travels with Charlie, and Grapes of Wrath. It is a more exciting read then his other books; it was hard for me to put down which was not my experience with his other works.

Classic submitted by pepemama on July 21, 2017, 3:40pm There are chapters from this book that I reread whenever I get disappointed about the state of current literature. Mr. Steinbeck is a true giants in the field of literature.

Great submitted by hahahame on July 24, 2017, 6:37pm Though a bit slow to begin, this was a thrilling and interesting read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

My favorite from high school submitted by BobReik on August 17, 2020, 8:48pm I had to read this one in my junior year of high school. It's not the only required reading that I've enjoyed, but it is the only one I've re-read since school. A true classic.

It's good, but... submitted by audreyhalversen on July 13, 2022, 12:23pm This book is so tricky for me because it is gorgeously written and beyond impressive. On the one hand, I love it. But on the other hand, I kept wondering "does this guy hate women?" the entire time I was reading.

Indescribable submitted by courtneyhooper on July 26, 2022, 9:04pm Oh, goodness. This book is so extraordinary, getting at the origin of who we are as people, as families, as parents. Truly deserving of all the accolades, even if the first 1/4 feels like a slightly different book. So what! Even that very slightly disjointed 1/4 is better than 99% of books I’ve read!
