When I was young in the mountains

This children's author is a new favorite of mine. She writes beautifully, and has a neat history. She was born in 1956, and after her parents divorced she went to live with her grandparents in the Appalachians while her mother attended nursing school. They lived off the land, hunting local game for dinner. Her grandfather worked in the coal mine. This story is sweet and tender and reflects some of that history. The author later went on to attend Kent State and has written many wonderful books.
