A Classic Russian Christmas Tale submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 9:45pm This picture book shows its age somewhat with its generally high text-to-page ratio and static illustrations, but it has a unique and gripping visual style and an underlying sense of strangeness to it that comes from the original fairy tale. The plot seems to have a few nonsensical moments unless you are familiar with the story in advance, giving it an unsettled feeling that ultimately mirrors that of Baboushka herself. The drawings are surprisingly intricate given their thick lines and limited color palette, and they have an almost physical presence to them in the way that they show where the illustrator placed heavier weight on his pens. This book will appeal to fans of fairy tales, although it helps immensely to understand the original legend before diving into this retelling.
