COMMUNITY REVIEWS

OK submitted by Jan Wolter on July 6, 2013, 11:14pm An orphan girl tries to unravel the many faceted mystery of her father's death and finds herself entangled with cutthroats, secret societies, a cursed ruby and opium, as well as the odd photographer. Sally Lockhart is smart and courageous, but she somehow spends most of the middle of the book doing nothing much while others solve the mystery for her. The book might have been a bit more satisfying if she had been a more active protagonist and less of a victim of events, though admittedly less plausible. Still, a pleasant enough story to read, though rather on the grim and grimy side.
