COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A mixed message about ambition, hard work, and random luck submitted by FordAlpha on June 27, 2018, 10:40pm I read a lot of Bill Peet books growing up, and I enjoy reading them to my kids now--although I confess that their length often exceeds my read-aloud energy. Concise they are not. "Chester, the Worldly Pig" takes a good 20–30 minutes to read aloud. A young pig (Chester) determines to escape his meaty fate by developing a circus-worthy talent (this is one of several Peet tales set in a big-top circus). He works very hard indeed to perfect his unusual skill and to reach a circus encampment where he can join the show. But his hard work is for naught as he ends up a clown's miserable prop, and his escape from the circus only brings further harrowing misadventures. Only after he embraces his porcine fate and returns to the fattening farm life does Chester, by chance, get discovered by another showman who makes him a star--and not for his acrobatic talent, but for the sheer random luck of having spots that form a map of the globe. So it's unclear what message Peet (whose stories usually have clear moral themes) intends to convey with Chester. Bill Peet was a Disney animation artist, and his colored-pencil illustrations are always excellent, particularly the animals' expressions. Look for a cameo by Chester in "Randy's Dandy Lions", another of Peet's circus stories.
