COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Loved it submitted by unknown on June 23, 2018, 12:37pm As a YA/Teen book, this will satisfy. Peck's portrait of incompetent, absent mother and no father lights the reader's pathos for the young female protagonist. She progresses throughout the book addressing her weaknesses, setting and addressing her goals, and the book is extremely entertaining and satisfying. The book deals with class, abject poverty, the power of hunger, the precariousness of life and death, hints of the supernatural, Yankee ingenuity, the wisdom yet weirdness of elders, and the power of persistence, without being preachy or pushy or obvious. Fun and full of adventure, surprising and satisfying.
