Better Than Fiction?

one of the highlights of a recent Airbnb stay was the opportunity to take a book from the host's library. seeing Everything That Rises Must Converge, i remembered liking other short stories by O'Connor so i brought it home.
Robert Fitzgerald's introduction to that book includes several quotes from her letters, e.g. this one from 1953: "The Maple Oats really send me. I mean they are a heap of improvement over saltless oatmeal, horse biscuit, stewed kleenex, and the other delicacies that I have been eating."
i decided to postpone reading Everything That Rises. i thought i could ease my way into her fiction by reading Mystery And Manners first. that's not logical.
Mystery and Manners is not hard to read the way some books are, e.g. The Unnamable, but you can't just breeze through it. (it was a week overdue when i returned it.) if the book's effect on me is any indication, the Fitzgeralds' editing was sublime.
i love this book and you will too!
