In Bloom
submitted by Caser on July 18, 2011, 2:26pm
There are many great songs on epochal albums that I just can't listen to any more because I've heard them too many times. It's not a rag on the song's lasting power or shortcomings in its production even. Many times, that is what makes the song continue to be great today. This is just on me and oversaturation.
Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are both make that list, along with Rolling Stones' Satisfaction, Pearl Jam's Jeremy, Jimi Hendrix' Hey Joe, and countless others. But what is surprising is how well so many other songs on Nirvana's explosive sophomore release, Nevermind, continue to sound fresh, especially if you haven't heard this one in several years.
In Bloom was spared some of the overplay that the other two song I mentioned have gotten, and for me, it distills everything that makes Nirvana so much fun to blast in the car any day of the week. Cobain has his distortion pedal on high gear, his low register, tonal scream still cuts through the speakers, and he even does that talking/singing blend in the verses, just like in the next best song on this album, Lithium. Grohl does what he does best, pounding the crap out of the kit. And Novoselic's guttural bassline carries the restless momentum of the song through its perfectly sequenced parts.
The first half is single-loaded and the second is sound and fury, so after you eventually tire of the pop sensibilities you can bang your head to the end. Great fun.

I take offense to who ever tagged this as "oldies". So rude.
Oh, a review for the CD? It's freakin' awesome. Listen to it. Now.
Stands the test of time submitted by EJZ on August 3, 2018, 8:25pm Still as good now as it was then. Particularly important to me, this was the first record I sought out myself independent of my parents, and they DID NOT APPROVE let me tell you. And while Nirvana definitely stood on the shoulders of giants - Pixies, Meat Puppets, etc - Nevermind proved they had their own sound and could make a record full of tracks that are tight and energetic from beginning to end. It's a very cohesive album.
Timeless and fantastic submitted by lstorc on August 28, 2018, 1:21am This is one of the finest examples of 90s alternative rock. Very few albums can hold a candle to this one!
