Charles Arrowby, leading light of England's theatrical set, retires from glittering London to an isolated home by the sea. He plans to write a memoir about his great love affair with Clement Makin, his mentor both professionally and personally, and to amuse himself with Lizzie, an actress he has strung along for many years. None of his plans work out, and his memoir evolves into a riveting chronicle of the strange events and unexpected visitors - some real, some spectral - that disrupt his world and shake his oversized ego to its very core.

Disappointing submitted by shannonwait on July 28, 2018, 8:49pm This book had a strange of combination of beautiful writing that I loved and obsessive, rambling narration that I found incredibly off-putting. It explores the psyche of a narcissist from his own perspective but it just wasn't what I wanted out of a novel.

What I really appreciated about The Sea, the Sea was that Murdoch told the story in such a way that you knew exactly where each character came from, except the main character himself. I like how you realize that the narrator (main character) is unreliable as you read more, due to his obsession. I also liked how Murdoch continued the story at the end, giving the reader a clear ending, a clear vision of what would happen to the characters.

What I didn't love was the pacing of this book. At times, it was slow, which made me feel "stuck", and at other times it was so quick you didn't realize what was happening. This was a pretty good read, and I liked the author's take on religion. I wouldn't totally label it as a 4/5 stars though, because I just didn't find the story/ background of the story itself very interesting.
