Very Mozart submitted by Meginator on August 24, 2020, 10:09pm First, a note about instrumentation: despite the name of this album, each piece features the named instrument with a string quartet (or trio) accompaniment, rather than an ensemble made up solely of that instrument. Mozart plays this up by often exchanging melodies between the featured wind instrument and the different string players, as well as between the strings, often resulting in a pleasant cascading feeling. The clarinet and oboe hold their own well with the strings, with the oboe actually replacing one of the traditional violins, and the horn may feel better with better recording or amplifying equipment (it often maxed out my speakers, but given that this was only a problem with the horn and not the other instruments, I wonder if it may be an artifact of the recording process and not a problem with my speakers). Each of these chamber pieces feels very Mozart and requires a fair amount of talent on behalf of each of the players, lending each composition a concerto-like feeling in miniature. I found the slightly altered instrumentation to be more engaging than string-only chamber ensembles and recommend these pieces as a way to get a feel for Mozart’s more intimate compositions.
