Nothing Special submitted by mrajraspn08 on August 12, 2013, 12:05pm I was expecting a new twist on old stories, but that's not what this book is about. Two stories are completely new, two are old, but only one of the latter could be considered a retelling--the other I found to be just the same-old same-old. As to the new ones, the plot is rather slow, and the endings are expected and hardly worth the effort to get to them. If you need something to read, it's just interesting enough to keep you occupied; if you have something better, feel free to pass this by.
Fairy Tales For Thought

McKinley is well-known for her retellings of classic fairy tales as well as her original stories in the genre, and this is a great book which features two of each type. Her original stories are dreamy and use poetic language, yet she crafts simple plots that fit right in with classic fairy tales.
The Twelve Dancing Princesses is a stand-out. It is my favorite fairy tale and McKinley's version is my favorite version of it.
Interesting! submitted by purplekitty on July 23, 2015, 2:14pm This book contains four delightful tales. Two are new, and two are older. One of the older tales is essentially the same as the old story it is based off, but is still fun. The other, a retelling of the Princess and the Frog, is recognizable as coming from the story it is based off, but is very different at the same time (for example, the frog is NOT thrown at the wall). The book also contains two tales that are new and, though they are slightly predictable, are very fun to read. This is a great book and I really enjoyed it.
