Dragonsinger submitted by SBNB on June 15, 2018, 3:08pm This is my favorite Pern book so far. It follows Menolly at school and takes place around the same time as Dragonquest.

Harper’s story submitted by denisekim on August 2, 2023, 11:53pm Wonderful story about a girl training to be a Harper in the land of dragons

One of the less problematic Pern books submitted by am_nich21 on August 10, 2023, 2:23pm The second book of the Harper Hall Trilogy is probably my favorite. We see Menolly grow into her own as a harper, and actually see McCaffrey grapple with the consequences of her patriarchal society and its impact on women on Pern.

that being said, McCaffrey still falls into old "not like other girls" tropes when writing Menolly in contrast to her fellow teenage girls (truthfully I'm not sure McCaffrey knows of another way to write women except by denigrating female side characters).

I also really enjoyed seeing some of the events in dragonquest from another perspective. credit where it's due, McCaffrey has a VERY solid grasp on her time lines.

Overall an enjoyable read that holds up much better to modern audiences than many of McCaffrey's other books, with the notable exception of some casual ableism toward a side character.
