slow moving submitted by camelsamba on August 19, 2020, 10:47pm I don't remember exactly what drew me to this book, but I was expecting it to be a spy novel of some sort. The back flap claims it is "intricately plotted, tautly paced." However, I thought the pacing was stodgy and moralistic. The cast of side characters was large and twisted and somewhat confusing at times. And though the majority of the book is written from a third person point of view, Chapter 23 switches to first person for Eleanor (the former fiancee of the main character) for some reason that is beyond me. At the core, the intrigue has to do with an "undercover" Communist band running a narcotics ring, and it is the narcotics connection that leads to the moralistic tone. This author was supposedly a master of the genre in her time, so perhaps I am just not sophisticated enough to appreciate her talent.
