Originally published: New York : Viking Penguin, 2003.
Introduction -- Foreword -- The gunslinger -- The way station -- The oracle and the mountains -- The slow mutants -- The gunslinger and the man in black.
In the first book of this brilliant series, now expanded and revised by the author, Stephen King introduces readers to one of his most enigmatic heroes, Roland of Gilead, the last gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which frighteningly mirrors our own, Roland pursues the man in black, encounters an alluring woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York called Jake.

Could Go Either Way submitted by jaegerla on January 3, 2011, 10:22am The first 270 pages were deathly boring, then the last 20 pages turned it around and seemed to give the series a lot of promise. But even with the switchup at the end this didn't leave me in a rush to read the next six books. Someday I'll get around to reading the rest. It's either going to be a pleasurable reading experience or a complete waste of time.

It's a good series submitted by afuquas on October 22, 2011, 4:39pm Just like Jaegerla said, this book is kinda boring. But the rest of the series is amazing, I think it is worth reading this one, so your not confused with the rest of the series, since at times the main character does reflect on the events that happen in it.

I didn't find this at all boring submitted by Janet ledford on September 25, 2016, 7:31pm Love this whole series and have re-read it several times. I did not find this book boring. Might be kinda slow for people who need graphic novels.

Something different from King submitted by keldan315 on August 21, 2017, 7:07pm While we all expect horror from King, his greatest work is the Dark Tower series, a fantasy series which combines elements of Western gunslinger culture, post-apocalyptic fantasy, and science fiction. It's a fantastic series, but some people find the first book less to their taste. Fans either love or hate this book.

I WIsh This Were More Like LOTR submitted by jucruz on July 13, 2019, 8:07pm Riveting writing, but oh, so dark, so so dark. CAN’T THERE BE ANY UPTURNS IN THIS PLOT? It would be a page turner if each page didn’t leave my hand trembling and dreading to go on. To compare this series to The Lord of The Rings strikes me as a bit hopeful.

Excellent submitted by TLW1998 on July 26, 2019, 9:05pm Stephen King does epic fantasy superbly!
