A favorite submitted by sara on July 17, 2015, 1:25pm This was one of my favorite books as a child.

Delightful submitted by schriste on August 16, 2015, 7:19pm Harold and the Purple Crayon is deservedly a classic and one that reads as well today as I imagine it did 60 years ago. The simple illustrations, sweet story and the emphasis on Harold's ability to keep "his wits about him" and draw his way out of any danger he creates makes this a story you'll really enjoy sharing with a child. Harold's adventures may take him to many different places but in the end he's never as far away from home as he thinks he is.

Imagination at work submitted by Zekicmom on August 30, 2015, 8:31pm Harold sets such a good example! Using only a purple crayon and his imagination he enterains himself by creating wonderful adventures.

Great submitted by kelleyc on July 28, 2016, 5:39pm This was one of my favorite books when I was little. So much imagination!

Lovely and Fun submitted by keldan315 on August 25, 2018, 11:12pm Very young children can enjoy this book, and slightly older ones can appreciate some of the subtleties, like how Harold's actions are leading to the next event.

Imaginative submitted by JennJenn on August 3, 2020, 12:00am Harold uses his imagination as he explored with his purple crayon. The use of language and word play makes it fun for kids and adults.

A classic! submitted by amandasaurus on June 15, 2022, 10:51pm I loved it, my daughter loves it, it’s a wonderful calm relaxing story great for bedtime reading. The high contrast colors (white, black, purple) are great for little eyes.

This book has stood the test of time submitted by Diananana on June 30, 2023, 5:29pm I have loved this book since I was a child. We, that is, the book and I, are very close in age. I have read it to my children and to my grandchild, and to numerous other children. It so simply expresses that it's fun to go out and explore, but at the end of the day, a child yearns to go home. It is a small book, only 16 cm high, that easily fits a child's hands. Give it a try if you haven't read it before.

Though best known for his Harold books, from 1965 until his death in 1975, the author, Crockett Johnson, painted over 100 works based on geometric and other mathematical principles. See the Wikipedia article about him for links to a gallery of these paintings.
