Jane Dalgliesh is another great character. submitted by lisa on July 10, 2022, 4:37pm This is the novel in which you see her most. P.D. manages to tell us about Adam's family of origin in various ways, over the course of the books, and his aunt is a rich part of that deep multi-book character background. A big part of the fun with her work is contemplating the psychology of her detectives, and her other (clearly) admired characters---and what that meant about P.D. herself, and her values.

In this particular adventure (I wish AADL weren't culling so many of her mysteries) there's a classic remote/rural setting, and a plot that I manage to forget well enough that I can re-read it every decade or so and still be surprised about who did it. Ah, the benefits of a less-than-great memory!

Mostly it's for her amazing sentences, though, that I love P.D.
