In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys--best friends--are playing in a Little League baseball game in New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills his best friend's mother. Owen Meany believes he didn't hit the ball by accident. He believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after 1953 is extraordinary and terrifying. He is Irving's most heartbreaking hero.

Read this in high school submitted by blancharddana on July 19, 2021, 10:27am It was a great book with very interesting literary themes.

Long, but worth it submitted by cldaniels on August 2, 2022, 12:44pm This book follows two distinctly different boys from childhhood into adulthood. It is full of interesting characters in unusual situations. Although some parts drag a little, the ending is clever and well worth reading to the end.

Long time favourite submitted by annster on August 25, 2023, 9:02pm I've read this several times and more than once embarrassed myself by laughing out loud while reading in public places. Owen is unforgettable.
