Foundations of Physics. submitted by Jan Wolter on July 19, 2013, 6:28pm After Galileo wrote his astronomy book, he spent the rest of his life under house arrest, but he continued his research in Physics and, late in life, published one last book, the one he considered the most important of his works. In Two New Sciences, Galileo once more creates a dialogue between three imaginary men, who discuss Galileo's new discoveries in the areas of motion and mechanics. The solar system is not mentioned but a good deal of the foundations of classical physics are here: the strength of materials, leverage, the speed of light, pendulums, falling bodies, and accelerated motion are all discussed. This is an amazingly readable book, and it's a pleasure to follow his clear and careful reasoning.
