According to the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter -the world's only _totally reliable_ guide to the future - the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just after tea. Which means that Armageddon will happen on a Saturday night. There will be seas of fire, rains of fish, the moon turning to blood and the massed armies of Heaven and Hell will sort it outonce and for all. Which is a major problem for Crowley, Hell's most approachable demon and former serpent, and his opposite number and old friend Aziraphale, genuine angel and Soho bookshop owner. They like it down here (or, in Crowley's case, up here). So they've got no alternative but to stop the Four Motorcyclists of the Apocalypse, defeat the marching ranks of the Witchfinder's army and - somehow - stop it all happening. Above all (or, in Aziraphale's case, below all) they need to find and kill the Antichrist, currently the most powerful creature on Earth. This is a shame. Because he's eleven years old, loves his dog even though it's really a Satanic hellhound under all that hair, really cares about the environment and is the sort of boy anyone would be proud to have as a son. He's also totally invulnerable, and a nice kid. And if that isn't enough, they've still got Sunday to deal with.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

The apocalypse may be delayed... submitted by cherylo on July 6, 2011, 8:34pm This novel can be described as The Apocalypse as a complicated farce. The anti-Chist isn't quite who anybody thinks he is since he's not being raised by the parents chosen for him. War is getting along as a war correspondent who can cause bar fights with a flutter of her eyelashes, and Famine's been busy making a line of diet meals for that waif-thin at-death's-door look models so adore. Meanwhile, the descendant of a witch finds out more about what those prophecies handed down to her actually might mean, and and angel and a devil plot to try to keep existence on earth going a little longer than originally planned. Wickedly funny, sometimes touching, all excellent. This is one of my all time favorite books ever, and I recommend it to anyone I think might be remotely interested.

Biblical apocaplyse...gone wrong submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 17, 2012, 1:16pm Co-written by beloved British science fiction/fantasy authors Sir Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, "Good Omens" takes a hilarious look at Biblical apocalyptic predictions.
Demons and angels have their jobs to do, as do witch hunters and those trying to bring about the end of the world, but many of them have gotten lazy over the millenia and some are trying too hard without any success. The story is about the Anti-Christ, born and raised in suburban England and Hell's attempts to get him to get him to bring about the Apocalypse but with funny, unintended consequences. They try to send him a Hell Hound, but it ends up turning into its master's ideal pet...a small mutt with mismatched ears. Four bikers want to be the new Horsemen of the Apocalypse but fail due to their lack of imagination and commitment.
I recommend all these authors' works, so you can well imaging that "Good Omens" is a great collaborative work.

Says it all. submitted by ZackTheCardshark on August 1, 2013, 5:07pm "Put Terry Pratchett (New York Times bestselling author of Thud! and exalted Father of Discworld) and Neil Gaiman (New York Times bestselling author of Anansi Boys and revered Creator of Sandman) together ... and all Hell breaks loose."

Very funny submitted by carr1_e on August 6, 2013, 7:07pm A funny, witty book

Great submitted by anacoluthon on July 12, 2018, 9:34am Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett are absolutely brilliant

Good Omens : : The Nice And Accurate Prophecies Of Agnes Nutter, Witch submitted by lstorc on August 6, 2018, 4:23am Absolutely hilarious. This is one of the best reads of all time!

What a classic submitted by Bakalm on August 31, 2018, 10:48am Good Omens is a hilarious look at the Apocalypse, as told by two of the most amazing writers of our time. Appropriate for all ages, but not for those who take themselves too seriously. One of my favorite books of all time--if you enjoyed the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, you'll love this.

One of the most enjoyable reads submitted by RebeccaWittekindt on June 15, 2019, 8:29pm I’m a huge fan of Gaimen and Pratchett individually, and when they came together to team up on this, it was perfect. Their sense of humor and storytelling made this fun, and their characters made it very memorable. The end of the world was never so much fun!

Fabulous submitted by qbqrat on June 17, 2019, 8:04pm I had a slight acquaintance with the works of Neil Gaiman and no familiarity with Terry Pratchett until my friend recommended this book, which then led to me searching out the works of both authors. This book is tremendous and combines the styles of both authors seamlessly.

Good omens submitted by c_zhang on June 27, 2019, 11:10pm A hilarious and easy-to-read book.

Hithchiker's guide meets the apocalypse submitted by atpierce on June 30, 2019, 8:03am Funny, cerebral humor. Definitely some laugh out loud moments. Recently made into a mini-series.

Not worth the hype/Is this really funny? submitted by zixyxuan on July 27, 2019, 3:19pm So disappointed with this book, but then again, I've never really enjoyed a Neil Gaiman book. The plot was convoluted and overloaded with so many characters that I honestly didn't even care for what happened in the last 50 pages. The idea and storyline are witty and original, but the Gaiman and Pratchett's writing styles are basically gibberish to me. I would give this book 3 stars in the beginning, but the last half was just such a slosh. I almost fell asleep every single page.

I don't really understand the hype or why there are 5-star reviews raving about how funny this book was. Because it wasn't. However, I've heard that the TV show is much better so I'm definitely going to watch that.

Overall rating: 1.5 / 5 Stars

Slow burn submitted by sas.sorter on July 29, 2019, 2:45pm I did not understand any of the hype around this book the first time I read it at fourteen years old. It was an interesting enough story, but I didn't care about most of the characters and there was no drive to get back to it if I put the book down.

A few years later I heard about it again and thought I should give it a second chance. I read it again, and again, and again. At this point I easily come back to it every year, if not more. Even if I don't read it start to finish I know I can always flip to a random scene and get a quick laugh before continuing on with my day.

I urge anyone who has heard about the show to read this. For as much as I think amazon did a fairly good job of adapting the story, there were scenes that had to be cut that can only be seen here. Gaiman's habit of combining folklore and religion meshes so well with Pratchett's witty writing and footnotes that the result is, dare I say, ineffable.

Good book submitted by jasonc1177 on July 31, 2019, 8:02pm Great author and amazing book!~~

Looking forward to the "movie: (tentatively) submitted by SBrandt on August 30, 2019, 10:36pm Fantastic and clever read. I am looking forward to watching the prime series. Having reread the book, it seems like the did a good job casting. I am actually optimistic for an movie/tv version of a book,

iffy submitted by camelsamba on July 1, 2021, 11:10pm I've enjoyed most of the Terry Pratchett books I've read; a little more patchy on Neil Gaiman. However, I hard a really hard time getting into this one. I listened to the audiobook and there were many times I almost quit. But there must have been something, because I kept listening. It is weird and wacky, but requires a certain mindset to fully appreciate.

Hilarious!! submitted by KatieD on August 17, 2021, 3:27pm I want to watch the TV show so I decided to read the book first. I don't think Gaiman and Pratchett's sense of humor is for everyone, but I personally love it! I listened to the audiobook on Libby with my fiancé on a long car ride and we were both cracking up.

Made Me Want To Read Again! submitted by enbeans on July 10, 2022, 11:36am This book got me into reading again as an adult - clever, witty, and twisty. Highly recommend!

Lots of humor doesn't translate to America and/or to the 2020s submitted by eilusk on August 20, 2022, 2:32pm I have a lot of good things to say about this book, but for the sake of covering ground that I don't see discussed (on this page or elsewhere), I'm going to focus on a criticism: I felt like a lot of the humor and allusions in this book were way more specific than they are in other books by Pratchett and Gaiman. It often relies on familiarity with things like the basic plot of The Omen, a sort of vaguely-conspiratorial environmentalist/New Age subculture of the 90s/early 2000s, random really specific elements of English culture (for example, the legal phrase "grievous bodily harm"), and so on. (Not to mention, obviously, a lot of Christian theology!) A lot of these references I more or less understood, but they're not close enough to my life to actually be funny.

Great, fun book submitted by berger_d on August 28, 2022, 10:58am If you like your banter witty, your humor irreverent, a great adventure yarn, and aren't offended by poking fun at religion, this is a great, fun and rollicking read!

An all time favorite submitted by renarde7 on June 18, 2023, 11:17pm I read this almost every year, and it still makes me laugh. Fantastic satire with a lot of heart. Both Pratchett and Gaiman at their best.

Tongue in Cheek submitted by glenna on July 2, 2023, 10:42pm I’m always ready to read anything written by Neil Gaiman and this one does not disappoint. Such great satire about a topic that needs to be handled with care and just the right tone is adopted. I’m certain this could become a finalist for a banned book.

One of my all time favorite books! submitted by Marina_Hope on July 3, 2023, 5:17pm The joint product of two fantastic authors, Good Omens is both hilarious and filled with pointed commentary about society and opposite sides that is extremely relevent. Vibrant main and secondary characters draw you into the story. An absolute must-read for anyone with a sense of humor.

Charming submitted by keldan315 on July 28, 2023, 11:04pm Pratchett and Gaiman together have created a hilarious, charming, engaging story. So much fun to read

Absolutely fun book submitted by ajh on August 1, 2023, 8:56am Read this when it came out, and multiple times since. Great silly humor and clever writing.

Good Omens submitted by hrgray on August 8, 2023, 11:08pm This book brings together Neil Gaiman's amazing storytelling with Terry Pratchett's fabulous sense of humor. Good Omens made me laugh out loud several times. It's definitely a fun book worth reading and rereading.
