Cult Classic Anti-Hero
submitted by sdunav on June 12, 2015, 2:16pm
This is one of those classic books I've always meant to read....published in 1969, somewhat of a cult classic with a major anti-hero, the first in a historical fiction series featuring Harry Flashman.
He was a bit more than a cad - especially when it came to women - but the accounts of the English India and Afghanistan in 1840-1842 were pretty interesting, if a bit too graphic sometimes. I felt like Fraser really captured the attitudes of the time in a lot of ways.
A Cult Classic submitted by SoCalHistorian on June 20, 2020, 4:38pm The first of the classic Flashman series, this novel introduces the coward and anti-hero who would find himself involved in nearly every major historical event of the 19th century. The strongest aspect of Fraser's writing is his ability to capture the voice of a 19th-century English imperialist, both for good and for ill. There are times where Flashman's attitudes and actions are disturbing and graphic, but they capture the "feel" for the period better than any other novelist.
