Harriet the Spy refuses to become ruffled when an unidentified person starts leaving disturbing notes all over the quiet little beach town of Water Mill. She's determined to discover the author of the notes. And she drags her best friend, mousy Beth Ellen, into all kinds of odd and embarrassing situations in her efforts to reveal the culprit. Observing in her own special, caustic way with her ever-present notebook, Harriet the Spy is on the case. But will she be ready to face the truth when she finds it?

Arguably better than Harriet the Spy! submitted by ginarae3 on August 16, 2016, 8:07am The Long Secret, the sequel Harriet the Spy, is really, really good. I was reading this to my 10 year old son and it was definitely a book we got to discuss before, during, and after reading. Chapter Nine is about menstruation, but not like, "oh no, I'm dying!" or anything like "I'm a woman now!" It was like awesome! It was also a really good lesson in menstruation for my son, I think. We've talked about it before, but not a lot since he's a boy. If he were going to menstruate, I would talk about it a lot more. Anyway, one character is a child mad scientist and she's trying to find a cure for periods. Another girl asks some ridiculous question, and then the scientist girl goes all THE TRUTH and explains in detail what happens and sets her straight (her Grandmother had told her that rocks inside your body made you bleed). Harriet hasn't had her period yet, so they all chat like 12 year olds do, and it was so good. Plus, it was written in 1965, so that makes it even more amazing, I think. Great surprise ending, too. All around wonderful. 5 stars!
