Light Raid submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 19, 2013, 9:46am One of Connie Willis' earlier novels, "Light Raid" is about Hellene Ariadne, 17, who is evacuated from her home during the war between Quebec and the Western States. The two sides use laser lights as weapons, hence the book's title. Hellene ends up taking care of much younger children in neutral Victoria but hates the dull life. Suddenly the authorities arrest Hellene's mother for treason, so Hellene sneaks out of her foster home and back to her home town of Denver Springs to clear her family's name. Along the way, Hellene learns a great deal she wishes she did not about her family and falls in love.
