Persevere!
Though this can be a dense read, it is well worth your time and effort. Ellison provides a dark and yet illuminating view into one man's experience growing up Black in the deep south in the first half of the 20th century, and the pain and conflict he continues to face as he moves north. I have to thank my high school English teacher, Judith DeWoskin, for having us read the first hundred pages, because it became my favorite book of all time when I read it in college.
