Youth level.
Five children discover a mysterious red book at the library and eventually they discover that it's writing the story of their own wishful adventures--a story they make up as they go, and then witness coming to life in the red book's pages. Along the way, the children meet a dragon, a wizard, and the baby and little girl from Half Magic, another Eager book.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

For Fans of Half Magic submitted by skcramer on July 15, 2013, 9:07pm Five children check a magical book out of their library and embark on a series of fantastic adventures. This chapter book, the last in Eager’s Half Magic series, once again draws on the fantasies of E. Nesbit in depicting everyday children who acquire and learn to control a magical wish-granting object. Yet what makes this book so delightful is the children’s perfect awareness of this Nesbitiness. Indeed, not only do the children reflect on how their lives are becoming like an E. Nesbit novel, but they also use stories like the Oz books, the Little House on the Prairie books and even Eager’s own Half Magic books as the basis for creating their adventures. Lovers of classic children’s literature will delight in these allusions, and a genuine love of books radiates from the page. However, many of these allusions may be lost on young readers who are not yet familiar with these books. Readers will at least need to have read Half Magic, the first book in the series, to understand certain sections of the book.

Marvellous submitted by anacoluthon on August 27, 2018, 1:48am I received the Tales of Magic box set for my birthday as a child, and although the language is a little old-fashioned, I greatly enjoyed reading the books over and over again. The magic in this book, the last of the series and that Eager ever wrote, is even trickier than that of Half Magic. But they have to figure out the rules here, too, before the book is due!
