Nah submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 18, 2021, 9:04pm ** spoiler alert ** The problem with stories about really boring, self-absorbed jerks is that the books are pretty boring and self-absorbed as well. Thomas Covenant is a man from modern times with leprosy who is either (a) hallucinating/dreaming while in a coma or (b) transported to another universe where he has amazing powers and has to decide if he will use them. But seriously, the first thing that happens in the new world is that he is charged with delivering a message, and he doesn't get to the place to deliver the message for half the book. Then he's a self-absorbed jerk for nearly all of the rest.

And then there's the place where the author has the bad guy say, "Even if you deliver the message, within seven times seven years I'll destroy everything!" Clearly a set-up for a million sequels (and there are at least 10 so far). Which may be fine, if the story and characters are good. But they aren't.

If this was the first chapter instead of the first book, it would have had potential. I'm slightly tempted to get the last one out of the library to see if the author's storytelling improved over the intervening years. We'll see. (Review written in 2009... I never did, and am pleased with that use of my time.)
