COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Cutting and funny. submitted by globesky on August 22, 2018, 1:17am DeLillo gently tortures his somewhat vain and sad characters to build a commentary on mortality and meaning in modern American society. There's a strong note of dark humor throughout the book as his characters struggle with (mostly) subdued hysteria caused by their fear of mortality. Really engaging read!
A most unusual narrative voice. submitted by ccrose on August 28, 2019, 5:34pm Interesting construction of a story that you feel leading you. Something is weak within a family's life but things go on as usual.
Thought-provoking and satirical

I borrowed this book after watching the film on Netflix earlier this year and I was interested to see how it compared. I heard that the book was called "unfilmable" until they finally made this movie and I'm not sure why. Sure it has a lot of inner monologue, but I don't think that makes it impossible to film -- and I think the movie did an admirable job of sticking to the book.
The book is quite thought provoking, especially with regards to mortality and 80's consumerism. There's a good bit of satire in it as well. I'm glad I read it and it made me reflective. The scene with the nun sticks out. I think the last few chapters get a bit off-kilter and were fine but I didn't love the end. It felt abrupt.
The pacing is interesting as most of the action happens in the middle of the story with theme examination as the bookend sections. I think the way the chapters are divided up is interesting too as some are pretty short but one chapter is incredibly long.
Interesting read overall and I'm glad I could ponder the themes and narrative choices.
