Christmas surprise submitted by rimpopu on June 22, 2013, 9:05pm Strega Nona works hard to get her home and food ready for the Christmas feast for the towns people. Alas, nothing is ready on the day of the feast. Is everyone going to be disappointed? This book is not as funny as the first book on Strega Nona but the surprise is really good. Nice read for anytime.

The pastel palette gives the illustrations, and the book, a gentle demeanor that works well alongside its themes of giving and togetherness. The book also has a small educational element, as dePaola showcases traditional Italian Christmas customs and foods. The story’s ending may be predictable given the long line of books that do something similar, but the character design and the uncommon setting still set this classic book apart.
