Christmas History submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:47pm This picture book shows the Christmas celebrations of a German immigrant family that maintains their cultural traditions after their move to a small New England town whose families do not usually make much of the holiday. Tomie dePaola’s soft-textured illustrations lend a natural warmth to the story, although the moral message seems a little close-minded and cold as it presumes that there is only one appropriate way to celebrate the holiday (and, for that matter, its assumption that everyone must celebrate it in the first place). Nonetheless, the book is an excellent introduction to historic Christmas customs and to the cultural impact of European immigrants who came to North America around the turn of the 19th century.
