so so submitted by Lindsie on June 30, 2011, 9:58am its a good read if you like history and suspense but you have to push along boring parts

Boring submitted by imracom on June 24, 2014, 12:16pm Oh gosh, this is the most boring piece of literature...especially if it is for an assignment.

Childhood submitted by alexmichaelp on July 6, 2019, 7:11pm This was my favorite book as a child. So epic and realistic for an adventure from one of America's horrific wars.

The Red Badge of Courage submitted by leighsprauer on June 15, 2020, 9:23am Stephen Crane's classic short novel describes a few intense days in the life of a Civil War soldier. The war defines the soldier's life and character, and book's genius is in his self-realization of that fact. The "youth" is not only living through the awful battles, which Crane describes in lurid detail, but, throughout, questions his own ability to confront these battles with courage and to arrive on the other side of the them as a better man. Through him, Crane explores the meaning and place of valor, camaraderie, loyalty, patriotism, self-doubt, and cowardice. Although set in the extreme condition of wartime battles, the youth's self-reflection is universal.
It would probably be worth a second reading of the book to fully understand the development of the youth's character, but unfortunately I can't find it in me to do that. It was a bit of a slog to get through the first time: both the archaic language and the extremely detailed descriptions of the battle make the idea of re-reading it feel like a chore. The youth is not compelling enough as a character, and Crane is not compelling enough of a writer, to overcome these hurdles. As a part of the American canon, I'm glad that I read it, but I can't imagine doing so again.
