Beezus' biggest problem was her 4-year-old sister Ramona. Even though Beezus knew sisters were supposed to love each other, with a sister like Ramona, it seemed impossible.

Ruby loved this book! submitted by randiglaza31 on June 11, 2023, 9:54am Ruby loved this book because when you read it with your family it's a reminder of how other siblings have fighting moments too, then they work past their issues and love each other. Ramona is busy, funny and exciting. Beezus is a good big sister.

Ramona upstages her big sister submitted by Diananana on August 21, 2023, 4:32pm This book was supposed to be about Beezus' struggle to live amicably with her troublesome little sister, but Ramona stole the show. I mean, who could forget what happened to Bendix? This book ushered in the whole series focused on the irrepressible Ramona Quimby. Beverly Cleary broke the mold of traditional children's books that were quiet and sleepy. She wrote books with plenty of action and real-life problems. In Ramona, I found a character that I could really relate to. I have an appreciation for the original illustrations drawn for this book by Louis Darling. For me, the book is rooted in the 1950's, and those illustrations reflect that time. (Ramona is only a bit older than me.) The newer illustrations make it appear that the story is taking place some decades later. Yet, some of the actions in the book, such as putting one's hair up in pincurls, are anachronistic in the present day. Do kids now even know what pincurls are? How about applying for a library card on paper? I'm not recommending that the newer illustrations be abandoned, for in the 1950's, social inclusion was lacking both in fact and in book illustrations. Some young readers might enjoy seeing the original drawings. This could create an opportunity to talk about how things have changed and stayed the same since 1955, both in how we live our lives, and how we represent ourselves in literature and art.
