more short stories to exercise your little gray cells submitted by camelsamba on August 12, 2018, 11:04pm "On Poirot's [side of the table] was a cup of thick, rich chocolate which I would not have drunk for a hundred pounds" <-- all the evidence you need that Poirot is superior to Hastings! It is clear that Hastings cannot be trusted. :-) (quote from "The Chocolate Box")

This is a collection of short mysteries, more in the line of jewel theft and kidnapping than murders. The quality varies between them. For example, The Disappearance of Mr Davenheim (which Poirot solves without ever leaving his study) has an interesting solution but also a giant leap. Likewise, it is hard to follow the logic in The Adventure of the cHeap Flat - I get what is going on but not necessarily how Poirot figured it out. The final story, The Chocolate Box, he says is his one failure. I like how he admits to and analyzes his mistakes as he relates the tale.

Good for Poirot Fans submitted by Meginator on June 12, 2021, 9:48am I would not recommend this as an introduction to Hercule Poirot, as the short story format tends to draw out his more obnoxious qualities without making room for his more redeeming ones. For readers accustomed to the detective’s peculiarities and pretensions, this is a varied group of stories that extends his repertoire beyond murder to include everything from kidnappings to a jewel heist. Christie does a lot of characterization in a short space, giving what are otherwise straightforward little mysteries a bit of unique character, although she does fall back on racist stereotypes when depicting non-white characters. These stories aren’t exceptional or extraordinary, but they fit in well with the Poirot canon and make for relatively breezy, unchallenging reading for fans of the genre.
