complicated! submitted by camelsamba on July 31, 2017, 12:45pm Just when you think you have it figured out, you discover: it's complicated.

Surprising Twist submitted by Meginator on June 12, 2021, 9:46am Hercule Poirot’s second outing is even better than his debut, as he travels to France at the behest of a wealthy man with a secret who turns up dead shortly before the detective’s arrival. Much of the fun of this book comes from the intricate details of the crime, which spool out ferociously fast and change almost constantly, leading to a final reveal that is shocking but, as always, fits the facts perfectly. Christie’s knack for providing red herrings alongside genuine hints keeps the reader continually guessing as to where the clues will lead next and provides continuous forward momentum as the mystery deepens and eventually unravels. Part of this novel’s particular delight comes from a new character named Giraud, a French detective whose modern evidence-collecting methods offer an excellent foil for Poirot’s little grey cells. The Belgian is, of course, triumphant in the end, but the contrast gives the character added depth beyond his analytical and observational skills. This is classic detective fiction at its very finest.
