David Power and Clare O'Brien both grew up dreaming of escape from the battered seaside town of Castlebay, but they might as well have had the ocean between them. David is the cherished son of a prosperous doctor, while Clare lives with her large family behind their faltering store, longing for a moment of quiet to study. When they both go to university in Dublin--he as a matter of course, she on a hard-won scholarship--their worlds collide. They find freedom in each other--until the families, lovers, and secrets they left in Castlebay come back to haunt them.

Worth the read submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 11, 2017, 8:22pm Maeve Binchy is back on track! I wasn't as impressed by the last two books of hers that I read (Whitethorn Woods and Night of Moon and Stars), but I though that Echoes went back to some of the outstanding storytelling that I loved in Quentin's, Scarlett Feather, Tara Road, and others. Binchy has a gift in her ability to tell the story of a quiet, off-the-beaten-path kind of place and yet draw you in to the character's lives in a way that leaves you itching to pick up the book at all times of day and night. That the main character wants something more than the people around her turns out to be just enough difference to give the story something to sink its teeth into, while still seeming totally believable. Worth the read.
