COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Good introduction to Oe submitted by marielle on June 27, 2011, 2:22pm Bird's wife gives birth to a baby with a horrific congenital defect. Will he resort to the escapism which has plagued him all his life, or will he do what has to be done?

Ōe Kenzaburō won the Nobel prize for literature in 1994, in part because of this book. A Personal Matter is a great introduction to his body of literature and his voice. The book is both poignant and depraved, with an intense feeling of realism.

Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in Japanese literature or who has ever had a "personal matter" of their own to contend with.
