In depth history and culture of Ecuador
submitted by jjsteich on November 16, 2014, 8:59am
first, the small caveat: this book and s dated as far as a current socio-economic view of Ecuador. It was published in 1991, so most of the research was done in the late 80s. Other than that, the research is excellent. The writing is not stilted, but it does tend to use the language of academics and policy wonks.
The cultural chapters, while not current, still mostly apply. The country since the dollarization in 2000 has moved more people out of poverty, but the country still suffers from a disparity of wealth and the property distribution reform of 1964 is still mostly not accomplished.
Overall a four star read for in depth view of Ecuador. Emphatically NOT a travel guide.
