Obtaining a Library Card
An application for a new library card may be made at any Circulation Desk of the Ann Arbor District Library.The Ann Arbor District Library issues resident and non-resident library cards to patrons regardless of age. Patrons who live within the boundaries of the Ann Arbor District Library may obtain a free library card. The boundaries of the Library District are the same as those of the Ann Arbor Public School District.
The Ann Arbor District Library Board has instituted a non-resident fee of $150.00 per year so that people outside the taxing area wishing to use this library may share in the cost of supporting it. Non-residents may also be obtained on a quarterly basis. Payment for non-resident fees is due before issuance or renewal of the card.
Resident cards
Applications for all library cards must contain one of the following: the patron's date of birth, social security number or driver's license number.
To obtain a library card, a patron must show current photo ID and proof of current address. Any of the following may be used to as proof of address:
- Current Driver's license or Michigan ID card issued by the Secretary of State
- Current utility bill or other piece of official mail
- Lease or purchase agreement
- Checkbook with name and address imprint
- Student (K-12) report card or school schedule or AAPS school ID
- Current U. of M. directory (with student ID)
- Ann Arbor telephone book (with picture ID)
- Form letter from the Ann Arbor District Library, available at all Circulation desks. Receipt is proof of residency.
Renewal of Library Card
Library cards are renewed in person at any circulation desk of the Ann Arbor District Library. The applicant must show current photo ID and proof of current address.
Checking Out Materials
With your Ann Arbor District Library card, you may borrow the following materials:

Renewals
Library materials may be renewed at any circulation desk, online at aadl.org or by calling the Renewal Line at 734-327-4219 during library hours. Materials may be renewed if there are no holds waiting. We reserve the right to limit renewals on in-demand materials. Art prints and magazines may not be renewed.
Return of Materials
Library materials may be returned to the Downtown Library or any Branch. Exception: Art Prints must be returned to the Downtown Library.
Holds
Materials in circulation or on order (except for magazines and the Zoom Lends collections) may be placed on hold through our online catalog at aadl.org, by phone at 734-327-4219, or in person at any public service desk.
Fines and Charges
Fines are calculated from the date due. Fines are not charged on days when the Library is closed.

Payment Policy
Borrowing privileges will be suspended on any Library Card with $10.00 or more in unpaid charges. Payment may be made at any circulation desk with cash or a check made payable to the Ann Arbor District Library. Payment may also be made online at aadl.org/MyAccount. Partial payments are accepted.
