Crafter Beth Battey demonstrates the basics of Japanese paper folding, focusing on geometric shapes and boxes. Experienced paper folders are encouraged to come and share their skills.

Beginning Crochet Class

Local crafter Beth Battey will get you started in the wonderful world of crochet with a basic beginner's project. Supplies provided.

Felt Ball Fun!

Tuesday June 24, 2014: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Pittsfield Branch: Program Room

This event is intended for adults and teens grade 6 and up

Local crafter Beth Battey leads this hands-on workshop. Start with colorful wool roving, add warm water, a little soap and some patience, and you get a fun felt ball!

Felt balls can be toys for kids and pets, jewelry, a garland or a fun decoration!

Planet Rock Climbing 101 for Teens

Friday July 25, 2014: 1:15 pm to 4:00 pm -- Planet Rock at 82 Aprill Drive

This event is intended for teens in Grades 6-12

Join us off-site for an afternoon of indoor rock-climbing at Planet Rock on 82 Aprill Drive (off Jackson road). Registration is required and begins on July 1. To register please email the attendees first and last name, phone # and the grade they will enter in the fall to registrations@aadl.org. A confirmation email will be sent. Attendees must have a parent or guardian sign the required waivers and bring it with them when they check in or be available in-person to sign the waiver when dropping the attendee off at Planet Rock.

Dreamcatchers Craft Workshop

Monday June 30, 2014: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Malletts Creek Branch: Program Room

This event is intended for adults and teens grade 6 and up

Learn how to make your own dreamcatcher and, if you’d like, bring a treasured object to weave into it. Local crafter Dawn Henry leads this workshop.

The dreamcatcher project is intricate and will likely take the entire time to complete.

Tie-Dye Workshop

Monday July 21, 2014: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Malletts Creek Branch: Program Room

This event is intended for teens in grades 6-12

Local crafter Dawn Henry returns to teach this always fun and brightly colorful tie-dye workshop. We'll provide a bandana to dye or bring your own T-shirt, shorts, pillowcase or other 100 % cotton item! We'll be working outside weather permitting.

Shrinky Dink Sun Catchers

Monday July 14, 2014: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Malletts Creek Branch: Program Room

This event is intended for adults and teens grade 6 and up.

Use Shrinky Dink paper and markers to create a Shrinky Dink suncatcher to brighten your room!

Invented in 1973, Shrinky Dinks are a retro craft that's made a huge comeback in recent years –– and they're not just for kids anymore!

2014 "It's All Write!" Contest Finalists!

The finalists of the “It’s All Write!” Teen Short Story Contest have been decided! This year was particularly difficult for our dedicated readers, who reported that all of the stories were incredibly creative and a pleasure to read. This year was also the most competitive year ever, reaching an all time record of 358 submissions!

Are you ready to find out who will make it to the next round? Finalists’ stories will be passed on to the Panel of Judges, who will carefully select the 2014 Winners. Click here to see the list of finalists!

Join us for Chesstastic at Traverwood Sunday, April 13!


The monthly Chesstastic program will be occurring this Sunday, April 13 from 1:00 to 4:00pm at the Traverwood branch of the AADL. Chesstastic is a great way to meet new people, hone your chess skills, and learn more about the game from talented players. All ages and skill levels are welcome and encouraged to drop in! Chess sets are provided.

Do you have a burning question about the "It's All Write!" Teen Short Story Contest? Several writers have sent in similar questions about the contest, so hopefully you'll find the answers here. If not, feel free to email allwrite@aadl.org!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: When do I find out if I'm a finalist?
A: Finalists will be announced on or before Friday, April 11.

Q: When and where is the awards ceremony?
A: 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 10 at the Downtown Branch in the Multipurpose Room. The MPR is located downstairs, just past the Friends bookshop and to the left.

Q: When will you announce the contest winners?
A: The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony.

Q: What if I can't come to the awards ceremony?
A: We'd love to see you there, but it's also understandable that life (and sometimes distance) can get in the way. If you're a finalist, we'll let you know the outcome after the ceremony.

Q: Who can come to the ceremony?
A: ANYONE may attend! Bring your friends and family (pets have to stay home, sorry) and whoever else might want to come to enjoy a fun celebration of writing and hard work! More details coming soon!
